Assistant Curator - Institute of Systematic Botany         

 


Basic Job Functions


 

The New York Botanical Garden is seeking an outstanding systematic
botanist for a career-track appointment in the Institute of Systematic
Botany.  The successful candidate will pursue innovative specimen-based
and laboratory research focused on important issues in plant systematics
and will further use systematic and floristic data creatively to
identify conservation priorities and inform the conservation process.
(S)he will develop a strong field program, and make full use of the
collections of the Steere Herbarium and the facilities of the Pfizer
Laboratory.  Preference will be given to applicants with active field
research in North America or the New World tropics, particularly the
Caribbean Basin, Brazil, Mexico, the Amazon basin, or the Andean region.
Taxonomic focus on a large plant or fungal group (e.g., Asteraceae,
Fabaceae s.l., Rubiaceae, ascomycetes, bryophytes) will be an asset.
Inititation of and participation in integrative/collaborative research
programs will be encouraged.  In addition to research, the successful
candidate will maintain a productive publication program, pursue grant
opportunities, and contribute service to the Science programs, including
participation in the graduate program and possibly editorial work with
the NYBG Press.  Requirements include a Ph.D. in a relevant field of
plant sciences, a proven record of scientific achievement, and the
ability to establish an externally funded research program.
Opportunities to participate in the training of graduate and
undergraduate students as well as interns exist through partnerships
with local universities.

 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


 

*	Conduct field research studying the systematics of New World
plants
*	Conduct specimen-based and laboratory systematics studies
*	Maintain an active record of scientific publication
*	Use systematic data to address conservation priorities

 

Qualifications

 

*	Ph.D. in Botany, Plant Biology, or a related field
*	Significant experience conducting botanical field work
*	Significant experience with specimen-based research
*	Experience in molecular systematics preferred
*	Experience with application of systematic data to conservation
issues preferred
