The first installment of this catalogue is now available at http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/hcol/planalto/index.asp.
When completed, it will contain information from all specimens of vascular plant species collected in the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Tocantins, Goías, Maranhão, Piauí, and Ceará and in the Distrito Federal and housed in The New York Botanical Garden Herbarium. In addition, a digital image of one or two specimens of each species have been captured and attached to the database record. The collection locality of any specimen with geographic coordinates can be viewed on a map. The information in the catalogue is intended to provide a means to assess the diversity and endemism of the flora in this region.
Information can be obtained by searching the database directly or by selecting from a list of families for which the cataloguing has been completed. This first installment contains specimens only for the 90 families on the list. Records for additional families will be added whenever cataloguing of a family is completed.
Information about the Planalto Program at The New York Botanical Garden, which was funded by The National Science Foundation from 1964-1975, is also provided. The information includes an "interview" with Howard S. Irwin and William R. Anderson, then NYBG staff members, who were the leaders of the series of expeditions; a summary of the expeditions with dates and collection numbers; a list of the participants; and photographs from the field provided by William R. Anderson.
Creation of this catalogue is funded in part by the National Science Foundation (Jacquelyn Kallunki, P.I., and Emily Ashley, Co-P.I.).
