I don't know if the US government has taken any kind of position on the
matter.
The Dutch government is being very carefully neutral and refusing to get
involved in any way. Actually this is part of the problem, in the sense that
the Dutch government takes the position that van Roosmalen has given up his
Dutch nationality and that any action by them would represent interference
in the internal affairs of another state, Brazil.
Appartently, the Brazilian judges have taken the position that van Roosmalen
is Dutch-born, and therefore a foreigner, and therefore a flight risk. If he
were Brazilian-born he would be at liberty now, awaiting the results of his
appeal.
In effect, he is getting the worst of both worlds.
