Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that, thanks to a cooperative effort between CRIA (Reference Center on Environmental Information, Brazil), the State University of Campinas and Missouri Botanical Garden, we are launching Flora brasiliensis on-line, a complete digitized and databased version of the books published between 1840 and 1906 by editors Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, August Wilhelm Eichler, and Ignatz Urban, with the participation of 65 specialists from various countries. All taxonomic treatments of 22,767 species, mostly Brazilian angiosperms, printed in 15 volumes with 40 parts, for a total of 10,367 pages, are now available at http://florabrasiliensis.cria.org.br <http://florabrasiliensis.cria.org.br/> . This project was financed by the State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Vitae Foundation and Natura Cosmetics.
All plates were digitized in high resolution and are available on-line using Zoomify to enable the transmission of the images over the Internet. A database with metadata for each text page and plate containing the scientific name, volume, number, and page was structured and is searchable. All names cited in Flora brasiliensis are databased.
In addition, a system with adequate tools for specialists to add, update, and validate a list of names (Flora brasiliensis revisited <http://flora.cria.org.br> ) is also being developed.
This initiative is part of CRIA's and Missouri Botanical Garden's mission to share data, information, and knowledge about plants.
Please address any questions, comments, or suggestions to florabrasiliensis at cria.org.br <javascript:SendMail('florabrasiliensis','cria.org.br')> .
