Many thanks for the off-list replies. There are several such gadgets
currently on the market, but the 2 which look the best for field use are:

I don't think I could home-build one with the variable magnification of the
Zarbeco device for their off-the-shelf price, but their magnification starts 
at 40X, which is a bit high.
