To us zoologists, new names = new taxa (ahem....)
But yes, that would be new discoveries (or new splits of known
populations) -- not including new combinations of previously known species.
I think the numbers were closer to 200/year for fish a decade ago, but like
I said, I can look up the exact numbers.
