Mayr wrote on the various "causes" in biology, and what he has to say
is relevant to this discussio. See:

Cause and effect in biology. Science 134: 1501-1506.1961.

and especially

Teleological and teleonomic: a new analysis. Boston Studies Phil.
Sci. 14: 91-117. 1974.

I have taken the refernces from his book of essays, "Evolution and
The Diversity of Life".

Inciodentally, I have a discussion on Intelligent Design the first
discussion of the Introductory Biology (organismal level, for biology
majors) course I teach - this was the second year I have done this.
The feeling both times (n = ca 50) was very definitely that ID
belongs in a class on religion and philosophy.
