Many botanists will know Prof. John G. Vaughan, either in person,
or as author of the classic reference book, the New Oxford Book of
Food Plants. I have just heard from John's son that he died
yesterday (17 May), peacefully in his sleep.

John was Emeritus Professor of Food Sciences at King's College,
London. He had a long association with Kew, particularly the
Library and the Centre for Economic Botany. He lived in Petersham
and was a frequent visitor, most recently in conection with a
planned third edition of the Oxford Book. His other publications
included:

The structure and utilization of oil seeds. London, Chapman & Hall, 1970.

The biology and chemistry of the Cruciferae. Edited by J. G. Vaughan, A.
J. MacLeod and B. M. G. Jones. London ; New York : Academic Press,
1976.

Food microscopy. Edited by J.G. Vaughan. London : Academic Press,
1979.

Chemosystematics : principles and practice. Edited by F.A. Bisby, J.G.
Vaughan, C.A. Wright. London: Academic Press, 1980.

Seed proteins. Edited by J. Daussant, J. Mossé, J. Vaughan. New York ;
London : Academic Press, 1983.

All are welcome to the funeral, which will be on Thursday 26 May,
at St. Peter's Church, Petersham, Surrey, at 1.45 or 2 pm (time to
be confirmed). Feel free to contact me for more information.

Mark
