How many Taxonomists are there?

Dear all,

for the Global Taxonomy Initiative
(http://www.biodiv.org/programmes/cross-cutting/taxonomy/default.asp)
which tries to increase the numbers of taxonomists,  I am collecting
information on How many of us there (still) are?  There is a number of
guesses around ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 worldwide. However I would
be interested to find some more concrete figures. These could be nos. of
members in taxonomic / systematic societies, national reports, museum
staff data etc.

In the present context, I take a broad view on what a taxonomist. He can
but need not be a professional; species description is not necessary etc.

Can anybody help me with more numbers and informations? That would be a
great success!
