CATALOGUE OF VASCULAR PLANT SPECIES OF EASTERN BRAZIL

 

This Catalogue was completed in May and is now available with a new
interface at  http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/hcol/sebc/sebcindex2.asp.
The Catalogue contains records for c. 118,000 specimens in 214
families-all the specimens of vascular plant species collected in
Eastern Brazil (i.e., the states on the coast from Rio Grande do Norte
to Rio Grande do Sul) and housed in The New York Botanical Garden
Herbarium.  Because the Catalogue is intended to provide a means to
assess diversity and endemism of the region's flora, for each species
that also occurs beyond the boundaries of eastern Brazil, the Catalogue
contains records of specimens chosen to indicate the limits of the
species' geographical range in the Americas.  Specimens on loan at the
time the Catalogue was prepared and any newly accessioned specimens will
be added to the Catalogue as they come to hand.  Any additions and and
any changes to extant records are reflected on-line instantaneously.

 

The most recent additions to the Catalogue include Asteraceae, Poaceae,
and Solanum.   Families with more than 4000 records include: Asteraceae
(8536), Poaceae (6609), Fabaceae (5373), Cyperaceae (4983),
Melastomataceae (4826), Rubiaceae (4780), Mimosaceae (4375), and
Caealpiniaceae (4361).

 

Information can be obtained by searching the database directly or by
selecting from a checklist of families. Searching the database will
return specimen records that match the search criteria.  Selecting a
family from the checklist will return a list of genera and species in
that family.  Further selection of a genus or species name in the
resulting list will return specimen records just like those returned
from a search.
