I thought I might forward to taxacom this list which I posted yesterday to
the TILS-leps-talk list serve (a YahooGorup) as some might be interested in
having it on file.
We welcome the deposition of primary and secondary Lepidoptera types into
the TILS collection. I mention this as various museum's Lepidoptera
sections are now in state virtual or actual closure and finding working
facilities is not as easy as it once was. I know I now wish I had not
deposited some of the name bearing I types in certain museums as they are
now no longer accessable and I wonder how safe they are. A case in point
is the holotype and allotype of Poanes hobomok monofacies I sent the LACM.
I put it there as the holotype of P. h. wetona was also there and I like to
see things like that under the same roof. However, I now am concerned
about the long range safety of these specimens. Conversely, it was a good
move on my part to deposit several name bearing types in the FSCA, now
joined into the McGuire Center at UF in Gainesville, FL. So where are
types better off at - a big place like the LACM or a meager little place
like the TILS museum? The answer is simply wherever the collection is
actively cared for and available to researchers.
Here is the list of our holdings to date as posted on the TILS YahooGroup
list serve.
(In plain text so should come out OK on your PC.)
