Actually, if you look at GTI documentation, you will find that microorganisms get equal billing to animals and plants.  The report of the First Asian Regional Workshop on the GTI gave microorganisms particularly heavy weighting.    The Belgian Government, in their funding programme focussed on the GTI, supported in 2004 a project including microorganism work in Asia, and also record in their report to the CBD their support for microorganism work in China.  EASIANET, a taxonomic network set up with government approval (and external funding) with specific reference to implementing the GTI, has run a training course on microorganisms in the past year.  ASEANET, a similar network, has also run training courses, and focusses on microorganisms in a recent taxonomic needs assessment. As for the CBD being a 'fairy godmother', it is up to us as practitioners to use the ammunition given to us in policy statements, and apply for funding accordingly. If you want to use the policies agreed by the Parties to the CBD under the GTI to help you get funding for microorganisms, they are there for you just as much as they are for the rest of us.  Go for it!

	Brian,    I would not get my hopes up about CBD and GTI ever being fairy
	godmothers to microorganisms.    If  the world has failed to give
	adequate support to studying the Malesian rainforests, then what hope
	for the micros?     Even though the biological systems, upon which both
	rainforests and urban humanity rely for their survival, are based
	ultimately upon interactions with micros,  no one in power really gives

	mmmmm.... somewhere I missed "Microflora of Malesiana", "Microflora of
	Australia". Even the microflora of a kangaroo would probably list more
	microbial species than there are vertebrates in Australia. It is, indeed
	nice to see that taxonomic research in zoology and botany is starting to
	benefit from the CBD and GTI. However, there does appear to a difference
	in attitude towards flora/fauna vs microflora. Brian
