I think the problem runs much deeper than this.

A way would have to be found to educate the majority of students (and
people in general) such that they welcome the complexity and diversity
of the world as a positive asset and a wealth of opportunities, rather
than as a threat to be feared and averted by following simple
half-truths or untestable beliefs (and the religious and political
leaders who sell these).
