   Dear colleagues,

Since July 2004 the Instituto Butantan decided to create officially the
curator position for the 4 zoological collections holded at that
institution: Herpetological, Entomological, Acarological, and Arachnids
and Myriapoda.

In February 2005 the Arachnids and Myriapoda collection was locked by
the curator,  thus preventing access to the specimens by the other
researchers.

I've been working with mygalomorph spiders for almost 15 years now, 10
years as researcher of the Laboratorio de Artropodes. In this period I
produced some taxonomic revisions and worked on the biology  mainly of
theraphosid spiders. I've been also the responsible for identification
and inclusion of specimens in that mygalomorph collection. I worked
hardly in identificating the 11,000 specimens deposited there.

Then, suddenly, I and my students had denied the access to the
specimens, even being a taxonomist researcher. The Brazilian
Constitution warrants access to
information for every citizen, and so I looked for the justice to get
access to the specimens.

However, in April 01, 2005 I was compulsoryly transferred to a new
laboratory, Imunochemistry. Two weeks later I finally got a judicial
order to give me free access to the collection. Surprisingly, the
institution did not follow the judicial order ! Two months later, I
tried again to examinate some specimens, but the access was denied again
by the curator.

I am still awaiting to have access to that collection. A few specimens
was loaned for I finish some of my papers. However, for someone who
works with cladistics, it is necessary to compare many taxa in order to
have characters to make the analysis. Due to the difficulties in getting
specimens, this work has been very difficult.

In July, the alive specimens that were used for studies of biology,
among them specimens of the spermathecae-lacking species Sickius
longibulbi, were taken from me and Dr. Pedro Ismael da Silva Junior,
responsible for the specimens after I leaved the Laboratory. Thus,  many
works on  mate behavior, defensive behavior concerning urticating setae,
and so on suddenly stopped. Many students had their work affected by
that posture. That's not the adequate treatment that should be given to
official  researchers of a scientific institution, and Dr. Pedro asked
for leaving the Laboratory. I wrote a letter asking for an official
position regarding those specimens, but did not receive an answer yet.
We are very worried they can kill all mygalomorph specimens !

Despite all these troubles, we are far from giving up to work on
mygalomorphs.
We understand that some people are very interesting in giving this idea
out and we suspect some information stating this is being disseminate.

So, I would like to communicate to all arachnologists colleagues and
friends that we are still working with taxonomy and biology of
mygalomorphs and we have no intention of stopping to do it !

I would like also to hear from you about the conduct been carried out by
the curator of arachnids and myriapoda of Instituto Butantan.
Is it a normal procedure to deny access to a scientific collection by a
full-time researcher and his students of the same institution  ?
Someone has an idea of what could be done to stop this shame, apart of
the legal actions already on the way  ?

Caros colegas,

Desde julho de 2004 o Instituto Butantan decidiu criar oficialmente o
cargo de curador para as 4 coleções  zoológicas existentes naquela
instituição: Herpetológica, Entomológica, Acarológica e Aracnídeos e
Miriápodos.

Em fevereiro de 2005 a coleção de Aracnídeos e Miriápodos foi trancada à
chave pelo curador, impedindo o acesso de outros pesquisadores aos
espécimes.

Tenho trabalhado com aranhas migalomorfas  por 15 anos, sendo 10 anos
como pesquisador do Laboratório de Artrópodes. Nesse período eu
publiquei algumas revisões taxonômicas e trabalhei  com a biologia
principalmente de aranhas da Família Theraphosidae. Eu fui ainda o
responsável pela identificação e inclusão de espécimes na coleção de
migalomorfas. Trabalhei duramente na identificação dos 11.000 espécimes
alí depositados.

Entretanto, de repente, eu e meus estudantes fomos impedidos de ter
acesso à coleção, mesmo sendo um pesquisador taxonomista. A Constituição
brasileira garante o acesso à informação para todo cidadão, e, então, eu
entrei na justiça para ter acesso aos espécimes.

No entanto, no dia 01.04.05, eu fui compulsoriamente transferido para um
novo Laboratório, Imunoquímica. Duas semanas após, eu finalmente
consegui uma ordem judicial  que me dava livre acesso à coleção.
Surpreendentemente, a instituição não seguiu a ordem judicial ! Dois
meses mais tarde, eu tentei examinar novamente alguns exemplares, mas o
acesso foi negado novamente pelo curador.

Eu ainda estou esperando para ter acesso à coleção. Alguns exemplares
foram emprestados para eu terminar alguns trabalhos. Porém, para alguém
que trabalha com cladística, é necessário comparar muitos táxons para
poder ter caracteres para fazer a análise. Devido à dificuldade em
conseguir espécimes, esse trabalho tem sido muito difícil.

Além disso, em julho/05, os espécimes que eram mantidos vivos para
trabalhos em biologia, entre eles da espécie que não apresenta
espermatecas Sickius longibulbi, foram tomados de mim e do Dr. Pedro
Ismael da Silva Junior, responsável pelos exemplares depois que eu
deixei o Laboratório de Artrópodes. Assim, muitos trabalhos  sobre
comportamento de corte e cópula, comportamento defensivo envolvendo
cerdas urticantes, entre outros, pararam repentinamente.
Muitos estudantes tiveram seus projetos interrompidos por essas medidas.
Não é a forma adequada de se tratar um pesquisador oficial de uma
instituição cientíifica, então o Dr. Pedro pediu para deixar o
Laboratório. Eu então escrevi uma carta solicitando uma posição oficial
do destino a ser dado àqueles espécimes, mas não recebi uma resposta
ainda. Estamos muito preocupados que matem todos os exemplares de
migalomorfas !

Apesar desses problemas, estamos longe de desistir de trabalhar com as
migalomorfas.
Porém, nós acreditamos que algumas pessoas estão muito interessadas em
divulgar essa idéia e suspeitamos que informações a esse respeito
estejam sendo disseminadas.

Por isso, eu gostaria de comunicar a todos os colegas aracnólogos e
amigos que nós continuaremos a trabalhar com taxonomia e biologia de
migalomorfas e não temos intenção de parar de fazê-lo !

Eu também gostaria de ouvir de vocês sobre o que acham da conduta  do
curador de aracnídeos e miriápodos do Instituto Butantan.
É um procedimento normal negar acesso a uma coleção científica para um
pesquisador da mesma instituição e seus estudantes ?
Alguém tem idéia do que poderia ser feito para parar impedir essa
vergonha, além da ação judicial que já está correndo ?
