Probably it is AD more than BC that gets people uptight, as "anno
domini" (year of our lord). Still, as an atheist who does get irked at
"In God We Trust" and so on, I don't see anything wrong (or
"discourteous") with it. The reason what some see as courtesy is
derided as political correctness is because someone can be found to be
offended by virtually anything (case in point - the IMAX "Volcanoes of
the Sea" film), and there is no right not to be offended.
