Postdoctoral Research Associate in Ethnobotany: Dominican Ethnomedicine Project at The New York Botanical Garden Institute of Economic Botany

 

 

The New York Botanical Garden's Institute of Economic Botany is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a project investigating Dominican ethnomedical systems in New York City and the Dominican Republic. This position is supported by an R21 grant from The National Institutes of Health, National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The primary objective of this project is to survey and compare Dominican ethnomedical systems in the United States and the Dominican Republic, particularly investigating plants used to treat common health conditions.  The Postdoctoral Researcher will collect plant specimens in the Dominican Republic as well as in urban markets in New York City and collaborate with a group of biologists, pharmacologists and chemists at the University of Mississippi National Center for Natural Products Research to investigate selected plants identified in the literature and field studies, particularly those traditionally used for anti-inflammatory properties, seeking to increase understanding of their efficacy in Dominican ethnomedicine and demonstrate their value to local primary health care delivery systems. The project will also involve the preparation of a manual and other publications on traditional Dominican medical practices as well as the training of Dominican students in ethnobotany and natural products research. Other institutional collaborators on the project include Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, The Rosenthal Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine, The Jardín Botánico Nacional de Santo Domingo, and Enda-Caribe. 

 

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in New York City and undertake fieldwork in the Dominican Republic. We are seeking a person with training and experience in ethnobotanical investigation who can read and speak Spanish and English, has an interest in traditional medicine, and would enjoy working with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and health care professionals.  Knowledge of database development and data analysis using ACCESS, SPSS and/or SAS, and qualitative data analysis software are important. The position is renewable annually for a three year period, and it is expected that a subsequent R01 level proposal will be submitted to NIH/NCCAM to expand this work.
