     I took a closer look at the situation this morning, and I think Peter is probably right.   Although raising subgenus Potatoe to a full genus is somewhat appealing (and would no doubt put a big smile on Dan Quayle's face!), it would probably be too nomenclatorially disruptive.

     However, there is still the option (for those who do not oppose paraphyly) to continue recognizing a genus Lycopersicon as exgroup of a paraphyletic genus Solanum.
