Rosalind,

Ilex anomala in Hawaii is probably not a good choice for a study of leaf
miners. This tree has very few obligate herbivores, and as far as I know, no
recorded leaf miners. You (or your student) might want to check out the
Agromyzidae section of Insects of Hawaii for ideas on other leaf miner
systems to study.
