No, sorry, by "operate independently" I meant that they would be inherited
independently of their organisms. One could make a case that lateral
transfer is exactly that, but one could also make the case that, among
eukaryotes, lateral transfer is very much less common that longitudinal
(generation-to-generation) transfer.
