A bit of good news for systematics in the USA. The message of the
underlying of importance of systematics to empowering natural resource
management is making some progress. The current draft bills reauthorizing
the National Aquatic Invasive Species Act in the U.S. Congress (S.525,
section 1112 and H.R.1081, section 10) both include appropriations of $2.5
million per year for fiscal 2004-2008 for a program at the National Science
Foundation "to award grants to researchers at institutions of higher
education and museums to carry out research in systematics and taxonomy."
