The Botanical Research Institute of Texas invites applicants to apply for
the position of Collections Manager. We are seeking a highly motivated
individual with excellent writing skills, preferably with a Ph.D. in
Systematic Botany and a good understanding  of the database programs used
in botanical informatics.  This will be a senior level position at the
institute which is a relatively new and growing, privately funded and
endowed organization in Fort Worth, Texas.  The successful candidate would
fit in well with a small and highly motivated staff and enjoy, if not
revel, in the prospect of being the person who will conceptualize and lead
the development of the new herbarium for the institute in what will be its
new home in a building to be constructed adjacent to the Fort Worth
Botanical Garden.  The salary range is extremely competitive.

Our collections now total over 1,000,000 specimens with a botanical and
horticultural library of some 75,000 books and journals.

TITLE:  Head, Botanical Information and Collections Management

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Manages botanical database in support of collections and related research
projects. Liaises with computer consultants and staff to aid in information
management, and hardware and software needs. In consultation with Director
seeks external funding for development and maintenance of collections, and
in support of database, equipment and facilities. Conceptualizes long-term
scientific goals for development of collections in accordance with BRIT's
research and education mission. Oversees the care and maintenance of
collections and associated records; supervises collections staff and
oversees the activities associated with collections use to provide access.
Formulates collections policy in consultation with Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ph.D. degree or equivalent and 3-5 years of related experience. Grant
proposal writing experience very important. Excellent knowledge of database
systems, pc software (windows, word processing, spreadsheets) and
Internet/Worldwide Web. Knowledge of International Database Standards.
Knowledge of use and maintenance of collections-related equipment (e.g.,
microscopes, freezers, plant driers, herbarium cases, etc.) and pest
control procedures. Knowledge of health and safety standards, CITES
regulations, import-export procedures; Latin and Spanish reading
comprehension a plus.
