Fungi genus Cortinarius has over 1000 species.
There was attempt to divide it to 4 species, but the
opinion was that the division was not justified enough.

---------- Forwarded message--
I'm trying to find out if there are any cases in Zoology or Botany where
there are more than 256 "valid" taxon names linked "directly" to a single
parent taxon name. In other words, are there any families with more than
256 valid generic names within them, where such genera are not routinely
divided into sets of subfamilies (or, are there any subfamilies with more
than 256 valid generic names within them)? Are there any genera with more
than 256 species, where such species are not routinely divided into sets of
subgenera (or, are there any subgenera with more than 256 valid species
names within them)?

Aloha,
Rich
