Title: Taxonomic/Biodiversity positions at Reading, UK

We are urgently seeking job applicants for seven postdoctoral positions in 
the Reading/Cardiff/Southampton 'triangle'.  These include three positions 
at the Centre for Plant Diversity & Systematics at the University of 
Reading, to work on the BiodiversityWorld, Species 2000 and ENBI projects. 
The remaining positions are for computer scientists and programmers 
interested to work on biodiversity information systems. The advertisement 
appeared in Nature on 30 May. In addition, a further position for a plant 
taxonomist working for the Euro+Med PlantBase project has become available 
since that advertisement, and will be circulated shortly.

The three present posts are:

RO242: Taxonomic Project Co-ordinator for the Species 2000 europa project 
funded by the European Commission.

RO243: Biodiversity Project Manager for the BiodiversityWorld Project 
funded by BBSRC.

RO244: Biodiversity Information Systems Content Co-ordinator for the 
European Network for Biodiversity Information (ENBI) funded by the European 
Commission.

We have extremely high levels of employment in the Reading area now, and it 
may be difficult to find good people locally.  Also all three projects are 
highly international, so there is no reason for the employees to be 
British.  European Community folk qualify automatically, but work-permits 
for folk from outside the Community are also possible.

The biologists will be welcomed from any sector of biology including 
botany.  Previous employees of Species 2000 were a protistologist, a 
zoologist and a fish specialist, and applications from entomologists would 
be very welcome.

Biodiversity Information Systems:
Research Posts at Universities of Reading, Cardiff & Southampton

BiodiversityWorld
Four research positions are available in a team that will create the 
experimental 'BiodiversityWorld' system, a problem-solving environment for 
global biodiversity on the next generation GRID.  This is a fixed term 
3-year e-Science project funded by the BBSRC e-Science & Bioinformatics 
Panel, a collaborative project of the Universities of Reading, Cardiff, 
Southampton and the Natural History Museum.  Three further biologists' 
positions will be advertised in 2003.

1.  Biodiversity Project Manager (Ref. no. RO242), biologist with 
experience in biodiversity analysis and/or taxonomy, project management, 
and biodiversity informatics, at Reading (starting at GBP 29,709 - 34,158*).

2.  Software Engineer (Ref. no. 198), computer scientist with experience in 
system design and distributed computing, at Cardiff (RA1A scale, starting 
at GBP 22,522 - 24,435*).

3.  Knowledge Engineer (Ref. no. 01S702), programmer with an interest in 
biodiversity informatics and experience with Java and XML, at Southampton 
(Research Grade 1A scale, starting at GBP 21,503 - £23,373*).

4.  Middleware Programmer (Ref. no. RO243), with experience in data 
transformation and database programming, and an interest in biodiversity, 
at Reading (RA1A scale, starting at GBP 20,470 - 22,522*).

Species 2000 europa/Catalogue of Life
Two research positions are under negotiation for the UK component of 
Species 2000 europa, a fixed term 3 -year European network to establish the 
Catalogue of Life funded by the EC.

5. Taxonomic Project Co-ordinator (Ref. no. RO244), taxonomist with 
experience in project management, taxonomic databases and biodiversity 
informatics, to co-ordinate the network, at Reading (RA1A scale, starting 
at GBP 21,503 - £22,522*).

6. Software Engineer (Ref. no. 199), applications programmer with 
experience in system design and distributed computing, at Cardiff (33 mth. 
contract, RA1A scale, starting at GBP 22,522 - 23,373 p.a.*).

European Network for Biodiversity Information (ENBI)
One research position is under negotiation for the 'Species Bank' component 
of ENBI, a fixed term 3-year network to provide Europe's platform for the 
Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), funded by the EC.

7. Biodiversity Information Systems Content Co-ordinator (Ref. no. RO245), 
biologist with experience of the content of a wide range of taxonomic and 
biodiversity systems, and able to liaise with related projects, at Reading 
(RA1A scale, starting at GBP 21,503*).
