Curatorial Assistant -- Flora of Eastern Brazil project. One full-time
position, available 1 August 2002.
Basic Job Function: Participate in herbarium cataloguing projects and other
herbarium tasks. Specific Duties: Data entry of information from labels of
Brazilian plant specimens into a computer database. Selecting, sorting, and
filing of databased specimens. Determination of municipios of Brazilian
specimen collection localities. Processing of plant collections.
Miscellaneous herbarium tasks as needed. Qualifications: Minimum of a B.A.
or B.S. degree in plant biology; taxonomy coursework preferred. Must be
organized and familiar with scientific plant names and other biological
information and South American geography. Capable of accurate, efficient
data entry of botanical and geographical information. Experience in
databases and herbarium methods. Must be able to reach specimens in
cabinets at 8 feet and at ground level. Working knowledge of Portuguese

Curatorial Assistant - Non vascular plant type specimen catalog project.
Full-time position, available 1 July 2002.
Basic Job Function: Participate in herbarium databasing projects and other
herbarium tasks. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Enter information from
labels on non-vascular plant type specimens into computer database; find and
enter bibliographic citations from type specimens.Process vascular plant
collections and other tasks as needed. computerized system for managing
transactions; assist with specimen imaging and software testing as needed.
Qualifications:A minimum of a bachelor's degree (B. A. or B. S.) or
equivalent, preferably in plant biology; taxonomic coursework helpful.
Organized and familiar with scientific plant names and the use of reference
books. Capable of accurate and efficient data entry of botanical and
geographical information. Experience with databases and herbarium methods.
Able to reach specimens in cabinets 8 ft. high and at ground level. Contact

Shipping Clerk -- Full-time position, available immediately
Basic Job Function: Assist with the operation of the Herbarium Shipping
Office, and fill in for the Shipping Supervisor in her absence. Specific
duties and responsibilities: Count and sort specimens by geographic region,
plant specialist or plant family name, and to box and wrap all outgoing
shipments of plant specimens; record pertinent data of all outgoing
shipments in computer database; type mailing labels and custom forms; assist
in unloading and storing shipping supplies and moving them to and from the
storage area; assist Shipping Supervisor as directed. Qualifications: Must
have High School diploma; college courses a plus. Must have basic
word-processing and data-processing computer skills; must be
detail-oriented, neat and accurate in counting and data entry; must have
good reading and spelling skills and legible handwriting; must be able to

Herbarium Assistant-- part-time (17.5 hr/wk) position, available immediately
Basic Job Function: Assist with herbarium tasks and projects as needed.
Specific duties: Search herbarium for specimens collected in Brazil and
separate them from those collected in the rest of South America to document
the flora of eastern Brazil. Using Access databases, prepare labels for
specimens, specimen folders and herbarium cabinets. Sort or file mounted
plant specimens, according to taxonomic and geographic arrangements. Glue
and sew dried presssed plant specimens to sheets of paper. Assist with
other herbarium tasks as needed. Qualifications: At least some college
courses in biology required, taxonomy coursework preferred. Organized,
efficient person familiar with scientific plant names and geography and
with computer database and word processing software. Capable of accurate
data entry of botanical and geographical information and of reaching
