I am sad to report that Professor Jeffrey Harborne FRS, distinguished
phytochemist at The University of Reading, passed away on Sunday 21 July
after a long illness. The funeral will take place at Christchurch Church,
Christchurch Road on Monday 29 July at 1 p.m. followed by interment at
Henley Road Cemetery. A buffet will be placed at the back of the church for
any guests. Donations to Christchurch Church Fund.
Professor Jeffrey Harborne was head of the Department of Botany and a
former Director of The Harris Garden of the School of Plant Sciences, The
University of Reading. Jeffrey was a very great scientist who was elected a
Fellow of the Royal Society in March 1995 for his scientific achievements
in the sphere of plant chemistry, including the use of secondary compounds
in taxonomy, He had also been presented with a whole series of medals and
awards. He had been a likeable father-figure around the School of Plant
Sciences who although retired had still been working until his illness.
Jeffrey was born in Bristol, educated at Wycliffe College and the
University of Bristol (BSc, PhD, DSc), before a post-doctoral research
fellowship in Los Angeles at the University of California and a post at the
John Innes Research Institute. He joined the University of Liverpool and
came to Reading with Dr Christine Williams, his research assistant, in 1968
to continue working with Professor V. H. Heywood following Vernon's
appointment in Reading. Jeffrey published over 40 scientific books and
authored over 270 review articles and research papers!
He leaves a wife, Jean, two sons and seven grandchildren. He will be much
missed.
