Collection Manager, Entomology Section
Available 1 May 2002.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has a large (5.5 million
specimen), important insect and terrestrial arthropod collection that is
worldwide in coverage and comprehensive in scope. We seek a highly
qualified person to fill the position of Entomology Collection Manager.
This person would be responsible for collection management under the
supervision of the Curator of Entomology. The responsibilities include day
to day care of the collections, processing all incoming and outgoing
specimens and loans, participating in collecting, preserving, documenting,
sorting, identifying and maintaining collections, and participation in
public, exhibit and educational programs. The Collection Manager supervises
other technical and volunteer staff as assigned, and is the liaison between
the curator and technicians and between the Entomology Collection and the
Registrar. The Collection Manager must have the ability to make independent
decisions based on Museum and Entomology Section guidelines in the
management of collections. She or he must be current with entomological
research, especially trends and techniques in collections-based research;
have extensive taxonomic knowledge of insects; have excellent understanding
of computers and collection documentation via databasing; may participate
in ongoing or original research and attend professional meetings to
represent the Museum or the Entomology Section. This is a permanent,
full-time position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- primary responsibility for processing loan requests
- maintains and supervises the use of collection objects and specimens
- documents and processes all incoming specimens for addition to the
collection
- helps develop and implement plans for collection growth and improvement
- participates in the maintenance of temporary or permanent exhibits
- assists visitors with the use of the collection and technical literature
- supervises volunteers, Museum Technicians, Curatorial Assistants and
others, as assigned
- participates in Education and other public program activities of the
Museum, including (but not limited to) assisting with exhibits,
presentation of public lectures, instruction of Museum classes, and
presentation of collection resources
- assist or initiate proposals seeking grant funding for the Collection
- maintain and develop Entomology World Wide Web site
- assists the curator in preparing sectional budget, providing information
as requested
- maintains documentation of collection use
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- graduation from an accredited college with a Master's degree or
equivalent with specialization in Entomology
- at least 1 year of technical experience in Entomology, involving
identification or classification, preparation and conservation of specimens
for study, research or exhibition
- knowledge of basic computer programs, including databases
- knowledge of World Wide Web programming desirable
- excellent written and oral communication skills
HOURS: This is a full time, exempt position. Normal business hours are
Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
