Actually, everyone in botany sensu lato has an (unspoken?) agreeement to
follow the recommendations of Brummitt & Powell's Authors of Plant Names
that I menntioned earlier. This includes not just which initials to use,
but also how to abbreviate common authors: L. for Linnaeus, Michx. for
Michaux, Willd. for Willdenow, etc. With increasing global databasing of
names, it seems best to have a very broad perspective on authors, to avoid
confusion.
