See T. F. Stuessy, Plant Taxonomy: The Systematic Evaluation of
Compoarative data (ISBN 0-231-06784-4, Columbia University Press, New York,
1990), pp. 5-6 for a discussion. He quotes Linnaeus, Gen Pl. ed. 5 (1754):
"Let two enquirers, one a Systematic, and the other an Empiric ..." He
also mentions books with the phrase "Systematic[al] Botany" in the title
from 1809 and 1827.
