Following is an announcement for a systematic icthyologist at the University of Alabama.  This is one of four positions that we plan to fill for next year.  The other three are a aquatic vertebrate ecologist, conservation biologist, and aquatic biologist.

 
SYSTEMATIC ICHTHYOLOGIST

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

         The Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Systematic Ichthyology to begin August 16, 2002.  The Department of Biological Sciences has an excellent and growing Aquatic Biology faculty, whose collective strength is in fish, invertebrate, and vascular plant systematics, ecology of freshwater fauna, flora, and microbes, as well as in freshwater ecosystem processes.  We are seeking an individual committed to collaborating with departmental faculty and with our growing interdisciplinary research groups, such as the Center for Freshwater Studies.  We are particularly interested in attracting applicants whose research interests complement our existing research strengths and programmatic themes linking Freshwater Biodiversity and Ecosystem Studies and its NSF IGERT Ph.D. Program in Freshwater Sciences.  This position is part of a University enhancement of the Aquatic Biology Program that includes an endowed professorship in freshwater biology and positions in aquatic conservation biology and vertebrate ecology.  Several Ph. D. fellowships are available through IGERT and through the program enhancement.

         Qualifications and Responsibilities-- Candidates must have a Ph. D. and post-doctoral experience; strong background in fish systematics, natural history of fishes, and vertebrate zoology; a demonstrated ability to conduct collection-based independent research; ability to curate a large freshwater fish museum; and strong and effective communication skills.  The appointee will be expected to develop an active, externally funded research program and to contribute to interdisciplinary graduate training as supported through a NSF-IGERT program in Freshwater Sciences and a University Graduate Enhancement Program in Aquatic Biology.  Experience in the application of phylogenetics to research questions that utilize modern approaches, e.g., molecular and/or developmental is expected.  Appointee should demonstrate a clear interest in interdisciplinary research questions that interface with the programmatic themes of biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics, and demonstrate an ability to address issues, e.g. evolution of traits, that interface with these themes.  Teaching will include graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of specialty as well as participation in core undergraduate offerings.
