Revisions in theses?

Chris is, of course, completely right although I don't think I was "completely" wrong. To an extent it depends on what one considers a 'thesis'. I agree that each case needs to be considered on its merits, so I was over-generalising based on my personal experience.

Intention does come into it, however, since Article 8.1.1 states that for a work to be validly published "it must  be issued for the purpose of providing a public and permanent scientific record."

In order to avoid these problems, all theses, dissertations and the like should contain prominent disclaiming statements to the effect that they are not for the purposes of nomenclature, something that is, unfortunately, easily overlooked.
