Eliza Catherine Jelly (1829-1914) was an English bryozoan worker, who
published a Synonymic Catalogue of Marine of Recent Marine Bryozoa in
1889. For a number of years she maintained correspondence with
collectors around the world and got them to collect bryozoans for her.
She mounted and identified the collections which she then exchanged
with or sold to museums or collectors. For a historical paper for the
International Bryozoology Association meeting this summer we are trying
to find out how what museums have E.C. Jelly mounted slides or specimens
of Bryozoa. We know she had correspondents and collectors in New
Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Belgium, as well as the UK. We
know that collections went to the following museums: Cambridge,
Manchester, Liverpool, Trinity College, Dublin, and the Australian
Museum, Sydney. We would like to know of any other collections. If
your museum dates back to the 1880s or before we would appreciate it
very much if you could check your catalog and archives for these Bryozoa
collections, and let us know how far afield Miss Jelly's collections
have traveled.
