Digital image to archival print

The question is how to produce archival *prints* from digital source.
I presume the prints are to be attached to herbarium sheets.
Bob Morris is right that color mapping between image files and output
devices (including monitors!) is non-trivial. There are books about
color management. But perhaps color isn't necessary?
My preference would be laser or ink-jet printing (using archival ink
or ink equivalent) of simulated half-tones on archival quality paper,
if possible printing directly onto the herbarium sheet.
One place to lurk for the latest tricks would be rec.photo.digital.
