DNA extraction from herbarium material

Back in the first of April, I had requested information on which protocols
that people used for extraction of DNA material from herbarium specimens.
I had several requests to post the results back to the list. I apologize
for the tardiness of this reply -- it's the end of the semester crunch!
Anyway, I had 2 respondants use the DNeasy kit from Qiagen.
I had 2 respondants use the protocol from Lookerman and Jansen in Sampling the
Green World.
1 used a modified CTAB protocol which is what my Major Professor normally
uses as well.
I also found a protocol in the taxacom archives ...
http://www.keill.ukans.edu/~gophtax/_gophtax.feb.97/0094.html
This protocol does not use CTAB.
I also know that the PureGene DNA extraction kit claims that it can be used
with dried material -- but I do not know if this is "fresh dried"
or if this will work with older herbarium material.
My personal favorite, though, involved sun-dried tomotoes, garlic, and
a light, white, wine ...
I hope this information helps others.
Susan
