Barry,
     Sterile only if you are regarding cladists and eclecticists as
different species.
     But as two subspecies of the same species, cross-breeding might produce
"genetically" stronger cladisto-eclecticists (the opposite of inbreeding),
and lower the numbers of both extreme cladists and extreme eclecticists.
      Taxonomists haven't split into two species yet, although PhyloCode may
be the barrier that will finish the job.  Of course, if it doesn't succeed,
that might provide the impetus for finally merging the two taxonomic
philosophies into one, which would make me very happy.

P.S.   BTW, I would agree that too much time and energy are expended on the
"Are Birds Dinosaurs?" debate---time that could be put to better use (and
must admit I have spent more time on it than I should).   However, the
debate over PhyloCode vs. Linnean classification is extremely important, and
the results will have very long-term implications (and those who are
convinced PhyloCode is the wave of the future may well be overly
optimistic).
