And by the way . . .
If you think I, or for that matter any of us, is going to the
Smokies because there is a *lot* of funding, you are sorely
mistaken. The funding I get basically consists of a place to stay
and do the sorting work, nothing more. I go because I am
reasonably close, because I know it won't *cost* me much,
because I can learn from the other people that are there even more
about the group I have some expertise in, because I can actually
contribute something to a cooperative project, because the
cooperative project can sample and identify an *entire* large group
(such as the Lepidoptera) and more extensive area which would be
much more difficult by myself, *and* the scheduled times (so far)
happen to fall in time slots where I am either free or can get free.
>From what Chuck Parker has told you, there probably really *isn't
anyplace* where biodiversity isn't in peril to some extent, and I am
not going to apologize to anyone for participating in an incredibly
worthwhile project, from which I can learn even more to apply to
future work inside *and* outside the park.
