Graduate student opportunity, University of Alaska.

We anticipate having funding for a graduate assistantship beginning as
early as July 2001. Consequently, we are seeking an enthusiastic student
interested in pursuing PhD studies in specimen-based ornithology with an
emphasis in molecular phylogeography. The array of possible projects to pursue
is broad, but will almost certainly involve field work and specimen-based and
molecular laboratory studies. Students with an MS, demonstrated field and/or
lab abilities, decent grades and GRE scores, experience with museum specimens,
and capable of data analysis and writing are both preferred and encouraged to apply.
Alaska is a remarkable state in which to study birds. Situated at the
confluence of the Old and New world avifaunas, and with a deep interglacial
history of refugia and the Bering land bridge, Alaska’s rich avifauna provides
a fertile ground for avian studies. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is
renowned for its wildlife research. Fairbanks itself is a great place to live,
provided you enjoy winter. Details about the University, the Museum, and the
Department of Biology and Wildlife can be found on the web at http://www.uaf.edu,
http://www.uaf.edu/museum, and http://mercury.bio.uaf.edu. Interested students
are invited to send letters of interest, curriculum vitae (including summaries
of grades and GRE scores), and the names of references to: Kevin Winker,
University of Alaska Museum, 907 Yukon Drive, Fairbanks, Alaska 99775-6960,
