Dear friends,
I have few of "my old" questions to ask. I have some doubts, too.
I didn't know where to "sort" some people who collected insect in past. And
I've started to ask myself...
Do I have right to call myself to be an entomologist? An amateur
entomologist even? Some of the amateurs were the best experts for some
groups of
insects.
There are many disciplines which can be combined with entomology together as
first or as second by meaning. Who is the entomologist and who is just
working close to insects.
1. Can somebody tell me the definition of professional and amateur
entomologist both or what is the difference between them? Their skill or
just their profession? Or both? How to measure that?
2. Are molecular biologists working with insects entomologists too, or just
molecular biologists?
3. Are insect collectors and insect dealers entomologists or not? Or just
collectors and dealers...
4. What kind of entomological knowledge (formal education) must one have to
be an entomologist? Is formal education necessary, or one can educate
himself (entomological books, experts help and so on...) and to became the
entomologist.
5. What kinds of entomology (entomologists) exists and how many
entomological disciplines do you know?
I have heard of some applied entomology sciences:
medical entomology, plant entomology (forestry entomology, pest's
entomology), forensic entomology...
What about bees keeping? Is that entomology, too? I think it is.
There are entomology systematics, for some insect groups (carabidologists,
coleopterologists lepidopterologists and so on...).
How many kinds of insect involved sciences (experts) do you know?
Best regards!
Boze Kokan
