I asked Ali Kelly, our Collections manager for some specific sites for
UTM/latlon conversion because she has been checking some of our data and
it seems that others, like me, really do not know where to look. Her
response follows. If you have any questions, please ask her as I would
prefer to keep the level of my ignorance somewhat concealed. The
information does not really related to Mark's point, but should be useful
for those interested converting (or providing the alternative data) for
existing specimens.

There are free converters for different datums at Geocommunity,
http://software.geocomm.com/coorconv/
You may have to experiment a bit to find out which works best for you.
Corpscon allows for batch conversions. A simple converter for Lat/Long to
UTM and vice versa is at Zetaware http://www.zetaware.com/. They have a
free version that allows for manual (single point) entry and conversion.
There are quite a few more converters out on the net, I use NorthernLight
to search on "convert utm" or something similar, which gives me many pages
of links.
