SELECTION CRITERIA
1. Tertiary degree or equivalent in Botany with specialisation in
non-vascular plants, or substantial equivalent experience. Honours or
postgraduate qualifications an advantage.
2. Demonstrated capacity for taxonomic/systematic research and
publication in Bryophytes or Lichens (or both); broad interests in these
groups; familiarity with Australasian taxa and literature in these
groups.
3. Demonstrated ability in development and management of herbarium
collections, and commitment to assisting with overall Herbarium program
management as part of a team.
4. Familiarity with issues relating to conservation and ecology of
cryptogams, and willingness to engage in collaborative or supervisory
roles in relation to projects in these areas.
5. Excellent skills in personnel management, interpersonal relations,
and communication with a wide range of staff, clients, and public.
6. Demonstrated enthusiasm and capability for outreach to agencies,
educational institutions, societies and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to plan and undertake local and remote-area
fieldwork.
8. Ability to represent the Herbarium's cryptogamic unit, and to
deputise as necessary for the Curator in representing the Australian
National Herbarium.
9. A sound understanding of Government policies on workplace diversity
(including Equal Employment Opportunity), workplace participation, and
Occupational Health & Safety, as they apply in the workplace.
10. Willingness to engage in and manage change in the workplace, and
to undergo training on a needs basis.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Research and related (40%):
1. Conduct taxonomic or related research in bryophytes and/or lichens.
Develop and participate in collaborative projects.
2. Pursue external funding, for research, including for Flora of
Australia treatments, for student and post-doctoral positions and other
adjunct personnel in cryptogamic botany, and for other areas of ANH
activity.
Herbarium management support (40%):
3. Manage and develop the cryptogamic Collections of the Australian
National Herbarium, and related services.
4. Participate and assist in the Herbarium Program management team,
and deputise for Curator as necessary.
5. Plan and undertake local and remote area fieldwork as required.
6. Utilisation of and support for CPBR Interns and Volunteer
Programs.
Outreach activities (20%):
7. Active liaison with external clients on behalf of CPBR and ANH.
8. Co-supervision of tertiary students (Honours and post-graduate);
participation in CPBR Summer Studentship program.
9. Development of Herbarium Associates network.
