THE MANCHESTER MUSEUM
PROJECT ASSISTANTS BOTANY
£12,515 - £13,951 pro rata
The Manchester Museum is rapidly building on a fine tradition of
scholarship, interpretation and access based on Designated
collections in the humanities and natural sciences. An award from
the Designation Challenge Fund in 2000 has enabled the appointment
of suitably qualified project assistants to digitise collections and
develop story lines for multimedia applications in galleries and the
WWW.
We are seeking committed individuals who can demonstrate experience
and enthusiasm for content creation and collections-based research.
You should have a sound knowledge of plant taxonomy and/or
identification, and some experience working with historic Herbarium
specimens. Successful applicants will work closely with the Keeper
of Botany to document the Museum's important collection of 77,000
British flowering plants. They will also be involved in digital
image capture of selected specimens and possibly also of living
plants and in incorporating data from other sources. You will take
an active role in developing ideas to produce a successful,
integrated and exciting multimedia presentation, possibly at
different levels for different markets for both CD ROM and the web.
We can offer a minimum of 17.5 hours per week and are willing to
negotiate flexible working patterns. The contract is until the end
of March 2002. We welcome applications from those seeking full time
appointments too. The part time positions would suit post-graduates
and other part time researchers, part time teachers with relevant
experience and freelancer workers. This is a unique opportunity to
gain important experience within the Museum Herbarium in the
University of Manchester and a chance to contribute to a truly
innovative project. Full training on the collections management
software will be given.
For an application form and information pack, please write to the
Services Manager, The Manchester Museum, The University of
Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK, stating where you
