FACULTY POSITIONS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

The Department of Biology at the University of Michigan solicits
applications for three tenure track faculty positions in i) Cell Biology,
ii) Evolutionary Genetics, iii) Systematics and Evolution of Land Plants.

Cell Biology. We seek an individual who uses a wide range of genetic,
biochemical and molecular approaches to study fundamental problems in cell
biology. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Cell
Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related field, as well as postdoctoral
experience. The successful candidate will likely work with Saccharomyces
cerevisiae, and join an active and expanding group of cellular and molecular
biologists interested in a variety of fundamental biological questions.

Evolutionary Genetics. We seek an individual who uses molecular tools and
model organisms to study fundamental evolutionary processes in laboratory
and/or wild populations. Research areas of interest include, but are not
limited to, evolutionary and quantitative genetic aspects of life history
traits such as development, reproduction, aging, and evolution of genome
organization. Persons who combine laboratory and field studies are
encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will join an active group
interested in a variety of fundamental and interrelated questions in
evolution and genetics.

Systematics and Evolution of Land Plants. We seek an individual who works
with all groups of land plants and uses all research methods. However, the
successful candidate will likely study bryophytes or pteridophytes, and will
incorporate molecular techniques and data in their research. The successful
candidate must be qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in
biology and plant evolution and systematics, and must develop an active
research program in the systematics and evolution of land plants.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Botany, Plant Sciences, or a
related area, and postdoctoral or comparable experience.

For all three positions, a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field, as well as
postdoctoral experience is required. In addition to establishing a
successful research program, the successful candidates will be expected to
participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching programs of the
department. To apply, send a curriculum vitae, copies of reprints, brief
summaries of present research and future research plans and teaching
interests, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent to:

Chair, Department of Biology
University of Michigan
Natural Sciences Building
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1048

Please indicate clearly in the cover letter for which position you wish to
apply.
Review of applications will commence October 16, 2000.
