Does anyone know what species of lice Canis lupus pallipes and/or Canis
lupus arabs are host to? I have only an old reference (G. Hopkins, The
host-associations of the lice of mammals. 1949, Proc. Zool. Soc, London.
vol 119) that lists Heterodoxus spiniger (name may have changed in the
interim) as present in Canis latrans, Canis familiaris and Canis aureus, but
absent in Canis lupus. This seems very strange to me and I am assuming
that at the time nothing was known of C. l. pallipes or C. l. arabs, the
southern wolves, and that Hopkins' data was based solely on the Northern C.
lupus. H. spongier may indeed be hosted by the southern subspecies.
Either way, this could be an important bit of data for my research.
I would be most grateful if anyone can point me in the direction of a more
recent reference or a person who might have this information. Please reply
directly to me as this is probably not of interest to the group. Thank you
very much.
