If VERY old memory (high school, 30+ years ago) serves correctly, I believe 
Alexander Pope made a parallel observation about human 
behavior.  Unfortunately, I do not now remember the name of the poem in 
which he stated:

"Vice is a monster of such horrible mien as to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with his face, we first endure, then pity, then 
embrace."
