Dear Jeff,

yes, indeed, Caffraria is the same as Kaffraria.  This is a portion
of the modern "Eastern Cape Province", situated to the north-east of
Grahamstown.  This was an area which the English colonists attempted
to clear of the original inhabitants (I guess we would now call it
ethnic cleansing) resulting in a long series of wars.  To my
recollection, the western border was the Great Fish River (just to
the east of Grahamstown) and the eastern border the Kei River.  The
province reached from the coast inland to the escarpment mountains,
but I dont think that the inland border was ever defined - it abutts
onto dry country that was of little interest at that time.  The
capital of British Caffraria was King Williams Town.
