Position Announcement


Computer Systems Maintenance and Information Specialist


Fairchild Tropical Garden, one of the world’s premier tropical botanical
gardens with internationally renown programs in horticulture, research
and education, seeks a full time computer systems maintenance and
information specialist. This new position will provide in-house
expertise to manage and service the Garden’s hardware and software
computer systems and databases.  Primary responsibilities include:

§ Install and maintain basic software and routine hardware on all Garden
computers.

§ Fully understand MSWindows desktop systems (95/98/NT) and software
packages. Interface with software companies and technicians.

§ Maintain Garden web server (NT) containing website, e-commerce retail
shop, databases, and email service.

§ Design and maintain MSAccess databases with active server page
interfaces for the Internet.

§ Migrate legacy data (in Advanced Revelation) to MSAccess database.

§ Provide in-house training and support in MSWindows and MSAccess to
Garden staff.

§ Insure that the Garden has the best access and use of information
technology within a defined budget.

§ Participate in Garden-wide steering committee to define and prioritize
future computer and information technology needs.

This position will report directly to the Garden Director. Salary range
is $36,000- $40,000/year plus benefits. Interested candidates should

PLANT CONSERVATION ECOLOGIST

Fairchild Tropical Garden (FTG) seeks a PhD researcher/project manager
with experience and commitment to plant conservation.  Work will center
upon South Florida and the Caribbean Basin where FTG has on-going
grant-funded research projects in endangered species biology,
conservation, recovery, and monitoring. Position responsibilities
include: research on biological and environmental factors associated
with endangered species conservation, recovery and habitat management;
oversee a GIS (Arc-Info) facility and databases, advise graduate
students and teach at local universities, establish collaborative
partnerships with local and international agencies and individuals,
develop grants, and publish research results. Candidate must be
comfortable working in multi-disciplinary research teams, have good
interpersonal networking skills, and be willing to travel, especially to

the Caribbean. Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable.  FTG is the
region's leading botanical institution with programs in horticulture,
education and research.  The FTG Research Center is located one mile
