Supporting systematics

I am looking for some excellent examples of strong, clear, concise
statements supporting systematics and taxonomy that provide convincing
arguments relevant to politicians as well as fellow scientists.

Things have moved on from this under CBD, but the Parties have committed
themselves to the Global Taxonomy Initiative in various ways - steering
groups are being set up, and each of the Parties must appoint a national
focal point - might be worth chasing who is doing this in Australia.  It
might also be worth finding out how Australia has contributed to the OECD
Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) discussions - try Ebbe
Nielsen at CSIRO?

For the UK, have a look at the 1998 Web of Life report from the UK
Systematics Forum - some general material and some UK-specific.
