CURATOR OF BIRDS

        The Delaware Museum of Natural History, Wilmington, DE seeks
applicants for the full time position of Curator of Birds. The successful
applicant will have a Ph.D. with a specialty in ornithology. The position
requires experience in avian systematics, minimum three years curatorial
experience, and strong verbal and written communication skills that are
effective with both professional and general audiences. Curator must have
the ability to work with people, and interest in public education; must have
demonstrated research record, peer-reviewed publications, and the ability to
obtain outside funding through grants and/or contracts. Incumbent will
provide leadership in the Bird Department: Conduct collection-based and
field research on systematics, which may include aspects of natural history,
ecology, or behavior of birds, and publish books and articles in
peer-reviewed scientific journals. Prepare grant proposals to support
ornithological research. Be active in scholarly activities such as
professional ornithological societies. Research having local relevance
preferred.
        Oversee maintenance and augmentation of the vertebrate collection
and research library including preparation and addition of specimens to the
collections, processing donations and loans, identifying specimens,
maintaining appropriate permits, supervising cataloging of the collection,
supervising collection management staff and volunteers, advising on library
acquisitions, and general administration of the department.
        Contribute to public service by assisting in developing Museum
exhibits and public programs, supervising and coordinating
vertebrate-related special events, and responding to inquiries from the
public. Oversee maintenance of vertebrate exhibits and assist with
developing special exhibits. Establish contacts with local ornithologists
and local and national bird clubs, and environmental and natural resource
agencies.
        DMNH's world-class research collections specialize in Birds and
Mollusks, with minor collections of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The
Bird collection is worldwide in scope, with special strengths in North and
Central America and the Philippines. We have over 100,000 study skins,
skeletons, eggs, and alcohol-preserved specimens of over 3,000 species. The
bird egg collection is the second largest in North America. The research
Library comprising 10,000 volumes specializes in birds and mollusks.
