Neutralizing plant collecting damage

Dear all,
My friend Tony Gassner once gave me the advice that if you want to collect
an orchid that has rather few individuals, you should hand cross-pollinate
some of the specimens left in the habitat in order to counteract the damage
caused to that population. This is of course applicable to many other plant
groups as well.
