It is a Usenet Newsgroup, not a mailing list. All you need is newsreading
software (most browsers incorporate one), but there is no need to subscribe
- like any bulletin board, you just read and post at your convenience.
There are several such groups that might interest many folks here, of
course, such as
sci.bio.botany, sci.bio.evolution, sci.bio.systematics,
sci.bio.entomology.misc, sci.bio.entomology.lepidoptera,
sci.bio.entomology.homoptera, bionet.biology.tropical, sci.bio.misc,
sci.bio.ethology, sci.bio.ecology, sci.bio.conservation, info.nsf.grants,
bionet.population-bio, sci.bio.fisheries, sci.bio.herp,
sci.bio.microbiology, sci.bio.paleontology, and others. I believe only
three of these newsgroups are "gated" - that is, linked to a mailing list
(sci.bio.entomology.lepidoptera, sci.bio.ecology, and maybe
sci.bio.conservation).
