List,
Is this problem with voucher specimens and identification to only family
level a result of a focus on other areas and a departure from the more
traditional methods. Perhaps this point has been made and I have missed it
or perhaps my outlook is skewed. I guess that is why I am asking.
I'm an undergraduate and am looking into going on to get my Master's. I
want to do a thesis and I want it to include taxonomy. I see a need for
taxonomists, as the older ones retire there seems to be a lack of new ones
to take their places. I have been discouraged from following this route.
I see this all as one big issue. No voucher specimens as the smaller
herbariums are falling into disuse. Identifications that are not taken to
species level because of a lack of qualified individuals to do them.
Disinterest in this field of study as interest booms in other ares.
Am I wrong? Is my view skewed due to my time spent locked away in one
institution? If it is not an issue suitable for the list I would appreciate
private responses.
Thank you,
Robert Neidlinger
